Case Study: Troy Dimensions - Engineering the Software for a New 3D Printing Benchmark

Troy Dimensions aims to reshape manufacturing by providing a complete, professional-grade 3D printing workflow. Their mission is to establish the industry benchmark with accessible and reliable DLP 3D printers that empower industries like jewelry, dentistry, and architecture to increase profitability, production quantity, and quality.

The Challenge: Accelerating a New Product Launch Amidst a Critical Transition

We joined the Troy Dimensions team during a pivotal moment: the development of their second-generation T2 3D printer. The project was already in progress but required a seamless handover from the departing lead software engineer. The primary challenge was to rapidly understand the existing architecture, take full ownership of the software development, and drive the project forward to meet its ambitious goals without any loss of momentum. This involved engineering the entire software stack, from the user-facing application to the low-level hardware controls.

Our Process & Solution: Full-Stack Ownership and Hardware Integration

Stepping into this key role required a swift and comprehensive approach. After a smooth knowledge transfer, our primary responsibility was the end-to-end design and development of the software powering the T2 printer.

Our solution involved several key areas of expertise:

  • Full-Stack Development: We designed and built both the back-end and front-end of the printer's integrated software. This created a cohesive and user-friendly environment that gives users advanced customization options, including slicing, support generation, and shape analysis.
  • Low-Level Hardware Control: To ensure flawless printer operation, we wrote custom Python and C scripts to directly interface with the machine's critical hardware components, such as the high-intensity UV projector.
  • Embedded System Management: We were responsible for setting up, configuring, and maintaining the custom Linux OS images running on the printer's embedded Raspberry Pi 3B and 4. This ensured a stable, reliable, and optimized operating environment for the entire system.

By taking ownership of the entire software ecosystem, we were able to ensure that the hardware (like the T-Curer and FPF Technology Tray) and the software worked in perfect harmony to deliver on the promise of high-quality, high-precision prints.

The Outcome & Impact: Launching a Next-Generation Manufacturing Tool

Our involvement was crucial in bringing the T2 3D printer and its ecosystem to fruition. The result was a powerful, reliable, and professional-grade manufacturing tool that enables businesses to significantly cut production time, improve material strength, and optimize their operations. The integrated software provides a seamless user experience, making advanced 3D printing technology more accessible to a wide range of industries.
